Yes but why is it that you see having to cope with situations with stimming toys as a bad thing? I feel like a lot of the negative aspects of ASD come from societal work that we have to do to hide our ASD. In fact, children with ASD raised by ASD parents often can not be diagnosed until they go to school cause part of the criteria for ASD is the traumatic experience of living in a neurotypical world when you are deeply different. Like, queer people have much higher rates of suicide, depression and anxiety but we don't consider being gay an illness. Lots of queer people wish they were straight too. We see that as a product of society. I have gone from having my autism work as a strength to having it be greatly disabling due to a comorbid autoinflammatory and mental health condition. But I still see it as part of my identity. It isn't always helpful and it can be a disability, but like many disabilities it has a huge social component.
